Minden, Nev. (May 12, 2026) — As off-highway vehicle use continues to increase across Northern Nevada, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents and visitors to understand and follow Nevada’s laws and safety regulations related to utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) and off-highway vehicles (OHVs).

Key Nevada UTV Laws and Regulations

Registration: All UTVs over 70cc must be registered with the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Non-residents must have either an OHV decal or a street-legal registration from their home state to operate in Nevada.

Helmets: Helmets are required for both drivers and passengers when operating on roads or trails open to street-legal vehicles.

Street Access: UTVs may be operated on general or minor county roads and some city streets for the purpose of accessing public lands. They may not be used for general transportation within city limits, such as traveling to stores or businesses.

Operator Requirements: Operators must be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.

Equipment Requirements for Paved Roads:
UTVs operating on paved roads must be equipped with:

  • Headlights and taillights visible from 500 feet
  • A functioning stop lamp (brake light)
  • A red rear reflector
  • A working muffler and spark arrestor

Traffic Laws: Operators must obey all Nevada traffic laws, including posted speed limits, when operating on roadways.

Off-Road Use: While helmets are not legally required when operating strictly off-highway, they are strongly recommended for safety.

Important Safety Reminders

No Conversion to Fully Street-Legal Vehicles: UTVs cannot be converted into fully street-legal, plated vehicles in Nevada, unlike certain two-wheeled motorcycles.

Vehicle Safety: UTVs should never be left running unattended.
